Skin Care And Cosmetology Salon
Skin Care And Cosmetology Salon
Cosmetology is a science pertaining to treatment of skin, hair and nails.
Normally women preferred this treatment, however, of late; number of men
receiving this treatment is also growing. A person who undergoes the prescribed
courses/training made pre-requisite by state laws and obtains a license (granted
generally for four years) to practice cosmetology is called a cosmetologist. A
cosmetologist is also known as a beautician, a beauty specialist, an esthetician
or aesthetician. At some places apprenticeships guided by cosmetology
teachers are also allowed, however, this practice is waning due to safety
guidelines and increasing lawsuits. A cosmetologist is generally employed in a
skin care and cosmetology salon.

Cosmetologists may also specialize in different specific disciplines of
cosmetology. These special cosmetologists include hair stylists, shampooers,
manicurists, estheticians and electrologists. A large number of cosmetologists
also take one of these courses and specialize in at least one of these categories.
Exfoliation – removing dead skin cells from skin – is an important aspect of
cosmetology to prevent ingrown hairs and to give the skin a younger and
healthier appearance. Exfoliation can be done both through mechanical and
chemical methods. In extreme exfoliation cases, cosmetic procedures like
Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion are resorted to. In these surface layer of
skin is removed by sanding. Cosmetologist carry out general ex-foliation,
however, for special cases services of specialized clinics and professional
dermatologists will be needed.

It may also be noted that a cosmetologist is different from a beauty therapist. A
beauty therapist’s works involve with beautician or aestheticians work, physiatrist
or body therapy work, electrology works or electrolysis. However, a
cosmetologist’s work is limited to only surface treatments.
Generally employment terms and conditions of a cosmetologist with regard to
remuneration is one of the following:
On Commission: In this case the skin care and cosmetology salon provides for
overhead expenses and the cosmetologist is paid a percentage out of the
amount received on account of services provided. The commission earned by
the cosmetologist is tax-deductible.
By Taking Booths On Rent: Under this arrangement the cosmetologist takes a
space in the skin care and cosmetology salon on rent. The expenditure on
account of products is borne by the cosmetologist and he is also taxed on his
earnings.
On hourly wage: The cosmetologist is employed on hourly wage basis. To keep
control on type of products used by the cosmetologist, a large number of
establishments prefer this.
The cosmetologists also earn a significant amount through tips from customers.
Mostly the administration and sanitation procedures, followed by a skin care and
cosmetology salon, are governed by the concerned health department and,
where applicable, by a Board of Cosmetology. Grievances from service-
recipients are also investigated and disposed off by these institutions.
